On Tuesday, February 18, 2014 Merrydale Elementary School hosted a Garden Dedication Ceremony in honor of the five gardens and benches that City Year Baton Rouge built for the school. This project was made possible by a Love Your Block grant from Mayor-President Kip Holden and the City of Baton Rouge. Love Your Block engages local volunteers to revitalize communities by providing mini grants to organizations to perform intensive neighborhood beautification projects across the City of Baton Rouge.

The garden will allow students take their learning outdoors and teach them how to grow and care for vegetables and flowers with their science classes. We would like to appreciate Mayor-President Holden, Chief Service Officer Kia Bickham, Mid City Redevelopment Alliance and the school leadership of Merrydale Elementary School for making the community garden for the students and teachers of Merrydale Elementary a reality!
