This year, City Year Baton Rouge teamed up with Delta Sigma Theta, Capital Area United Way, the Mayor’s Office, Boys and Girls Club, Volunteer Louisiana and many other partners for a city-wide service project benefiting the Scotlandville area. On Monday, January 20th, we began our day at the FG Clark Activity Center on Southern University’s campus. City Year corps members played many roles throughout the morning, including power greeting, supporting, registration, directing volunteers and leading PT. After Opening Ceremony, where nearly 1,200 volunteers heard words of inspiration from numerous public officials, including Senator Sharon Weston Broome, Representative Dalton Honore, Councilwoman Chauna Banks Daniel, and District Attorney Hiller Moore, to name a few, City Year headed to our two service sites, Crestworth Elementary and Ryan Elementary with board members and volunteers to support school beautification projects and campus clean up.

Our day concluded with a free community resource fair and health truck round up back at Southern University and a full slate of youth-oriented activities coordinated by City Year and the Boys and Girls Club to keep kids and teens busy with MLK themed reflection activities.
