Corps Member Monday: 4 Reasons Every 17-24 Year Old Should Do City Year

November 11, 2013

by: Kate Sheeder proud corps member serving on the Albemarle Foundation team at Merrydale Elementary School

  1. City Year is an international non-profit that focuses on eliminating the high school drop out crisis. Why would you not want to get involved with an organization that is setting and meeting this ambitious goal? You could help end the drop out crisis! Just think about it.pencil
  2. You will meet some of the funniest, weirdest yet most inspiring people while working for City Year. As a City Year corps member, you will be placed on a team filled with diverse individuals. Working on a team isn’t always easy, but these people will support you through some of your biggest challenges. They’ll work sixty hour weeks with you. They will drive you crazy. They will give you hugs when you need them. They will become your very best friends. If for no other reason, you should do City Year because the people you will meet will change your life for the better.

  3. Ummm, hello City Year has a uniform! You’ll never have to worry about what to wear in the morning. Khakis…check! White shirt…check! Name tag…check! Life is easier when you don’t have to stress about what to wear to work.

  4. The students you work with will stay with you for the rest of your life. You’ll learn way more from them than they’ll learn from you—I promise. Throughout your year as a corps member, you’ll work in small groups tutoring your students. You’ll make sure your students have their multiplication tables memorized. You’ll struggle to help them create the perfect thesis statement. Their academic battles become your academic battles. As your year goes on, their academic successes become reason for everyone to celebrate. I promise that the connection you make with your students will leave you with a sense of purpose and pride. By the end of your corps year, you’ll know that all your hard work paid off. Your students might not tell you, but they will appreciate you more than you can imagine.

Interested? I thought so. Lucky for you our next deadline is this Friday, November 15! Go to the City Year website,, to complete your application. You won’t regret it!

Oh, if ONLY there had been a CityYear when I was 18 and clueless about the power of giving back to others!

I have said it before Kate, but I’ll say it again…I am SUPER proud of the work you all are doing in Baton Rouge and to have a son affiliated with such an outstanding force for making better happen.
