W-E-L-C-O-M-E, welcome, Cougars!” the cheer squad shouted as Capitol Middle School staff, students, and community members cheered along. Saturday, August 24, we saw the second annual Capitol Middle School “Hear Us Roar!” Resource Fair, hosted by the CMS Diplomas Now team. Diplomas Now worked tirelessly for weeks to prepare for the fair, with collaboration from Ashley Churbock with Communities In Schools, Jennifer Zeringue with Talent & Development, and Cherie Cancio and Capitol Middle School corps members with City Year.

The fair played host to over twenty resources, with tabling from Girl Scouts, iCare, BREC Out!, YMCA, Families Helping Families, Louisiana Center for After School Learning, Planned Parenthood, Boys Hope Girls Hope, D.A.R.E., and Quarters. Students participated in pick-up basketball games and halftime talent shows, which spotlighted students’ singing, songwriting, and dancing abilities. City Year corps members and Louisiana State University volunteers worked together in the family activities room, providing a face painting station, mini nail painting salon, CMS coloring points, math and reading corners, and a photo booth for all fair-goers.

As a part of the Diplomas Now 30-Day Attendance Challenge, students received one raffle ticket for every day that they arrived on time and ready to work. Raffle winners were chosen at the fair and received a variety of different prizes, ranging from five-pound bags of gummy bears to the much-coveted free dress day pass.

With dancing music and more cheers from the CMS cheer squad, the resource fair was a great Saturday spent with Capitol Middle School supporters across the community!
