Photo Friday: Opening Day 2013 Recap

August 30, 2013

Yesterday, City Year Baton Rouge officially kicked off our  year of service at our 2013 Opening Day Pep Rally at Capitol Middle School.

We were honored to feature remarks by Capitol Middle School Principal Mrs. Viola Jackson, Volunteer Louisiana Executive Director Janet Pace, Deputy Superintendent of East Baton Rouge School System Michael Haggen and District 5 School Board Member Evelyn Ware-Jackson. These individuals demonstrated their commitment to education and service, and we are thankful for their leadership to our corps members and in our community.

With 66 corps members serving at Belaire High, Broadmoor Middle, Capitol Middle, and Merrydale Elementary Schools, City Year Baton Rouge anticipates this academic year to be the most impactful year yet with over 1,000 students receiving intensive math and English interventions, corps members will serve more than 108,000 hours, and over 2,000 students will benefit from whole-school initiatives planned and executed by corps members.

We are also very grateful to our school and district partners, and to all of the donors, sponsors and champions who joined us yesterday and have made the 2013 – 2014 City Year corps possible!
