Q&A

Why did you decide to serve with City Year? I have always enjoyed being around kids. City Year gave me the opportunity to help kids who were struggling and show them that they are capable of great things if they believe in themselves and put in the effort.

What is your current role and how has serving with CYBR contributed to it? I am about to start my corps year as a member of Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans.  I think that CYBR will made me ready for all the hard work I will have to do as well as interacting with members of the community that I will be serving that I otherwise would have not had the opportunity to if I had not been in City Year.

Do you have any advice for corps members? Do not try to change everything. There will be things that are out of your hands so you will need to pick the battles you fight where you can put all your energy into instead of trying to change many things. Come up with something you want to change and stick with it.

What was the most valuable lesson you learned during your time at City Year? Nothing can replace the value of hard work and perseverance. Sometimes the kids might drive you insane and you might feel like giving up on them but then they will do something that surprises you and lets you know that they are trying to improve, but need help and that you can be that person that makes a lifelong impact on their life.

If you were a City Year uniform piece, what would you be and why? The All-Weather Jacket. It rains a lot in Louisiana so keep it handy.
