Photo Friday: Girl Talk Reunion

May 31, 2013

Girl Talk is a lunch time program at Capitol Middle School that allows our girls to have conversations about the issues facing them. The program seeks to build confidence and self-awareness in the girls who participate in the program as well as teaching them anger management and conflict resolution skills.

Once a week we sit and have lunch together and talk about everything from how to deal with bullying, relationships, to what our favorite hobbies are. When we first started, my highest hopes for Girl Talk was to see the girls incorporate what they learn at our lunch meetings so that they were able to create a safe space to express themselves with their peers and with and us.

During the final weeks of school Communities in Schools and the City Year team at Capitol put on their closing program of the year where members of Girl Talk came together for a week-long reunion filled with mini workshops and presentations celebrating their time in the program.  Workshops included: Career, Self-Care, Respect for your Gender, Communication, and Dating 101 to name a few. The week ended with a luncheon where the girls were able to practice their manners and dining etiquette while being served.
