February 6, 2013

On Monday January 21, 2013 City Year Baton Rouge hosted their first annual Martin Luther King Day Youth Summit at Capitol Middle School. Over 100 students attended as well as approximately 250 volunteers. The volunteers came from a variety of organizations such as Starbucks and Winn Dixie. Students from Belaire High School, Broadmoor Middle School, Capitol Middle School and Merrydale Elementary School (woo Merrydale!) were also in attendance.

Throughout the day students visited several workshops that focused on non-violence, community, humanity, and service. Other volunteers completed physical service projects such as building picnic tables, painting murals and weeding the garden. The Summit ended with a march around Capitol Middle School. The march educated participants about key figures in the Civil Rights movement such as Rosa Parks. Students, volunteers and City Year members all enjoyed MLK Day and are looking forward to next year’s event!
