I Want to be a Cougar

October 19, 2012

By Lyndsie Guy, Corps Member Proudly Serving at Capitol Middle School

The beginning of October meant the return of a City Year recipe for success: Cougar Corps. Cougar Corps is the middle-school version of City Year’s after-school program for elementary schoolers, Starfish Corps. The team at Capitol Middle created the program last school year to fill a need in the community for kids to have a safe environment between the end of the school day and the time that a lot of parents get home from work. Cougar Corps meets twice a week and time is split between homework help and enrichments. Enrichments this year include sessions dedicated to art, theater, and gardening. Two other enrichments, “Boyz II Men” and “Cougarettes,” allow the boys and girls to be split up so they can talk about things such as relationships and self-esteem.

Capitol has nearly forty students participating in the program this year. Perhaps Capitol Corps Member Theresa Lodge said it best when she shared that she, “enjoy[s] working with the students after school, and they enjoy it as well. We have gotten off to a great start and look forward to continuing a great year!”
