On Thursday, September 27th, a rare event was presented to City Year Baton Rouge. A real live fashion show (Avenue Rouge Runway) took place at Celtic Studios (yep, a real movie studio in Baton Rouge) and few Corps Members volunteered to help out a bit. We all really just wanted to go and see what it was about. So, we bussed tables, wiped up a spill or two, and took out some trash. We didn’t even get service hours for it. We knew that when we signed up. But, what we did get was an opportunity to get our name out there. So many people came up to us, asking about City Year (we wore our bombers over our nice little outfits) and what we do. And most people were very impressed that we are giving a year of our lives to service. I was extremely giddy when I saw Merrydale Corps Member Jesse chatting with Ryan Phillippe about; you guessed it, City Year. All in all, it was a pretty cool night. We watched a legit fashion show, ate tasty food, played in the various photo booths, danced (a lot), and walked the (empty, post-show) runway. I enjoy service, but there’s just something special about getting to do the out-of-the-ordinary things every so often.

That is what is so amazing about service and volunteering, you never know where/what it will bring you in life.
