Take Pride in Your Pride!

It takes a lot of energy to get ready for school in the morning. I have to get dressed, brush my teeth, do my hair, pack my lunch, chug my coffee and mentally prepare for the day. This happens in a span of approximately thirty minutes. It’s sometimes stressful and always rushed. I’m assuming a lot of our loyal readers can relate to a hectic morning routine.

Now, try to remember what it was like when you were seven years old. Or, for parents reading the blog, how it feels to drag your kids out of bed and shuffle them to their bus stop or drive them to school. It’s slow moving, frustrating and definitely stressful.

Cue City Year. No, we will not complete you or your family’s morning routine. However, we will make school one hundred percent more inviting once students have arrived. City Year Baton Rouge’s Merrydale team greets students every morning in stations throughout the school. My morning station is the cafeteria where the majority of students eat breakfast every day. Merrydale’s cafeteria is located in the center of the school so there are no windows. The walls have a few motivational posters, but, for the most part, they are an uninviting beige color.

After working there for a few weeks, my team agreed that the cafeteria needed some re-vamping. And re-vamping we did! I introduce to you, on behalf of the Merrydale team, our Merrydale cafeteria mural:

Yes, City Year has some art skills! Thanks to Jo Reddick and the amazing Merrydale team we drafted, projected, traced and painted a beautiful mural for the cafeteria. We decided to include Merrydale’s mascot, a jaguar, to strengthen school spirit.

While this mural might not inspire our students to brush their teeth faster in the morning or get out of bed on time, it will definitely put a smile on their face when they walk to their table to eat breakfast. Great job Merrydale!
