Show Up, Show Out at Capitol Middle

September 6, 2012

This year, City Year Baton Rouge is making an early effort to start students’ attendance habits off on the right foot. At Capitol Middle School, City Year and Diplomas Now implemented an attendance initiative called “Show Up, Show Out,” which challenged students, classes, and teachers to make 100% attendance for the first two weeks.

Effective August 13 through August 24, the challenge aimed to stress the importance of attendance from the first day on, school-wide.

Attendance rates were tracked by grade-level, individual classes, and teachers. In order to entice students, morning announcements were made to advertise the rewards for incredible attendance; after the first week, the grade level with the highest attendance was given ice-pops and classes with the highest attendance were posted in the atrium, and teachers with perfect attendance were given a treat.

After the second and last week of “Show Up, Show Out,” students with perfect attendance were rewarded with a day of free-dress (street clothes rather than a uniform, so long as it was not in violation of Capitol’s dress code.)

In order to follow reinforce the initiative, corps members made attendance calls for students who did not show, as well as distributed flyers and hanging posters. “[‘Show Up, Show Out’] was pretty successful, for an event that started the first week. The eighth graders really brought it, which shows they are not playing around with school this year,” says Cherie Cancio, senior corps member and team leader at Capitol Middle.
