Party Time, Buccaneer Style

November 21, 2011

By Kylie Cannon, Corps Member Proudly Serving at Broadmoor Middle School

Across the East Baton Rouge Parish (that’s Louisiana code for county), schools are implementing what they call Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS). In a nutshell, this means doing our best to reward students who display positive behavior and signs of improvement. Today, in an effort to boost morale and reward students with good grades, no tardies, and zero behavior referrals, Broadmoor Middle held an exclusive VIP dance, complete with snacks and a DJ. And even better, these students were given special out of uniform passes for the day, making them the envy of the rest of the school.

The dance was a huge hit for the fifty or so students who attended. They zoomed around the room, high on sugar and freedom. Some highlights of the afternoon: contests to see who could keep their arm in the ice cooler for the longest and who could slide the furthest on the slick gym floor, and of course no Baton Rouge dance would be complete without a round of the Wobble. In the midst of the rules, regulations and problems that plague an academically unacceptable school, it was nice to have the chance to see our kids just being kids.
