City Year Baton Rouge Opening Day: October 7, 2011

October 12, 2011

By Kylie Cannon, Corps Member Proudly Serving at Broadmoor Middle School

Last Friday, along with City Year sites across the nation, City Year Baton Rouge officially opened its 2011-2012 Corps Year with all the energy and enthusiasm only City Year could provide. Resplendent with logoed balloons and our iconic Timberland boots, the Louisiana State Museum was City Year-ized to the max. Snug (and perhaps a bit sweaty) in our newly earned red jackets, I stood with the 40 Corps Members who have, over the past two and a half months, become both friends and family, to pledge to serve the Baton Rouge community for the next eight months of our lives.

I’ve never been one to get overly sentimental at big ceremonies such as this one, but I have to admit, standing onstage and listening to my fellow Corps Members tell the audience why they are dedicating a year of their life to service was both a powerful and humbling experience. I know that these Opening Day ceremonies took place at the same time across the U.S., but I can’t imagine the other gatherings being nearly as meaningful as our own here in Baton Rouge.

The words of Luke Kissam, CEO of Albemarle and important member of the City Year Baton Rouge Executive Board, perhaps best summed up the atmosphere of the day.

“If not you, who?” asked Kissam. “If not now, when?”

We are the City Year 2011-2012 Corps, and we pledge to serve Baton Rouge.
