On September 29, 2011, City Year Baton Rouge’s Diplomas Now team at Belaire High School welcomed the parents of their 9th Academy students.  The night was a great success with 35 parents in attendance.

The event was kicked off by parents being welcomed by Talent Development representative, Verdie Baptiste, followed by a plethora of information, an interactive question and answer session, and a raffle.  Prizes for raffle winners included Belaire High School T-Shirts, Raising Canes restaurant gift cards, and City Year swag.  Parents were more than enthusiastic to participate in the ELA, math, science, and social studies games which were headed by the City Year Bengals!

Along with DN, various staff members of Belaire assisted with serving hot dogs, chips, drinks, and candy to the families. The team leader of Belaire High’s team stated that “the event’s purpose was to engage our Ninth Grade Academy and educate them on the role of both City Year and themselves.”  We wanted to inform the parents about what their students were doing at the school and what we could do to make it better.  Communities in Schools, Belaire’s Guidance office and 9th grade Academy teachers, Talent Development, City Year, and the Board of Education all did an amazing job making sure that the 9th grade Academy parents got the full DN experience!
